Original promotional Reprise Records special white label DJ radio station release of The Jimi Hendrix Experience s 2nd studio album Axis: Bold as Love released in December, 1967. This promotional copy is the true 1st US Mono pressing with the earliest -1A / -1A matrix numbers in the runout grooves. Pressed for radio stations and the media, this special issue was shipped to them several months before the album s official release date. The front of the 1st print gatefold cover contains an incredibly rare misprint song title hype sticker. Despite the fact that we ve come across this sticker for the first time there are no doubts that it s authentic and original. The 5 x 1 sticker has the order of songs that doesn t correspond to the one indicated on the album. The bottom right corner of the front cover contains the second sticker reading Promotion Not For Sale which accompanies the majority of Reprise Records promotional copies released during that time. Special Reprise Records Promotion Not For Sale white labels without the Reprise steamboat logo contain the Mono banner and Mono R 6281 catalog number. The vinyl was mastered by Customatrix, a subsidiary of Columbia Records, as identified by the small o symbol in the runout grooves. The full matrix numbers of this promotional issue are as follows: Side 1: 10725 R-6281 A 1A o Side 2: 10726 R-6281 B 1A o. The album comes with the original Reprise Records inner sleeve with the adverts for the other Reprise releases.
Usually, the covers of this issue are found in a pretty worn out state. However, the cover of this copy is super clean and in Near Mint condition. It doesn t have any splits, wear, scuffs, ring wear, soiling, writing or residue. All of the edges and spine are rigid and perfectly intact. The interior gatefold is also very clean and in Near Mint condition. The promotional vinyl is graded as Very Good visually with its audio being Excellent. It has some surface hairlines and marks as well as scuffs from the original inner sleeve that can t be felt with a finger nail. The snow white labels are very clean and in Excellent condition, wear- and scuff-free only having some very light spindle marks that can be seen under a certain angle. The vinyl plays great having a warm and soft Mono sound with just some very light occasional static which could get reduced or go away if the record was professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. The original Reprise Records inner sleeve is in Near Mint condition and doesn t have any splits or tears.
