Original promotional Reprise Records special white label DJ radio station release of The Jimi Hendrix Experience s 2nd studio album Axis: Bold as Love released in December, 1967. This promotional copy is the true 1st US Mono pressing with the earliest -1A / -1A matrix numbers in the runout grooves. Pressed for radio stations and the media, this special issue was shipped to them several months before the album s official release date. Original 1st print gatefold Stereo cover with the format correcting Monaural sticker and a Promotional Not For Sale sticker which accompanies the majority of Reprise Records promotional copies released during that time. The cover of this copy represents a very rare variation. Usually, the front cover is wrapped around the gatefold interior with the paste over slick located inside. However, in the case with this copy s cover the interior cover is wrapped around the front and the paste over slick is located on the front. Special Reprise Records Promotion Not For Sale white labels without the Reprise steamboat logo contain the Mono banner and Mono R 6281 catalog number. The vinyl was mastered by Customatrix, a subsidiary of Columbia Records, as identified by the small o symbol in the runout grooves. The full matrix numbers of this promotional issue are as follows: Side 1: o 10725 R-6281-A 1A A2 Side 2: o 10726 R-6281-B 1A A I I. The album comes with the original Reprise Records To Play And Play Again inner sleeve containing the adverts for the other Reprise releases.
The cover is graded as Excellent. It s very clean and doesn t have any splits, writing, soiling, residue, wear or tears. Only some very light age shelf wear in a few places with the spine having a light scuffing. The gatefold interior is in great condition. Please take into consideration that the white spots inside the gatefold aren t scuffs and are commonly found on the covers of this issue as it seems the gatefold was closed too fast at the factory without letting the ink dry completely. We grade the vinyl as strong Very Good. It retains its factory lacquer but has some surface marks and hairlines as well as scuffs from the original inner sleeve which is in Near Mint condition and doesn t have any splits or tears. Please take into consideration that this is a promotional copy that was used at a radio station to promote the album and its hit songs. Side 1 has a couple of light marks that can be felt with a fingernail but which don t affect the playback. The snow white labels are very clean and in Near Mint Minus condition, scuff- and wear-free, only having a couple of very light spindle marks visible only under a strong light. The vinyl plays great only having some light static and occasional background noise. There is a short series of light pops at the start of Side 1 which perhaps could go away if you changed the weight of your phonograph s tonearm. Likewise, the static and background noise most likely would get reduced or go away if the record was professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine.
